To me, this week’s Weekly Photo Challenge – Free Spirit is about birds.
I love birds, and with the flame trees in flower, they are everywhere. It doesn’t really make them any easier to photograph, but here are some of those I’ve managed. And whether they are in flight or not, to me, a bird epitomises the term Free Spirit. So they are ideal for the Weekly Photo Challenge.
Kookaburras in Hyde Park – not normally so still and accommodating to the amateur photographer:
Pelican and seagull at Matilda Bay – & the seagull is the one showing real freedom of spirit here, but the reflection shows there is not, despite the alarm on Mr. Pelican’s face, any danger of a collision:
My local songbird and master of the domain (including the fluffy fat cat!) – a willy wagtail singing his little heart out:
& a magpie lark, high above Beaufort street, oblivious to all as he preens his wing feathers:
Parrots: Port Lincolns: sitting still and also, not so still:
Singing honeyeaters in green leaves, washing & just sitting:

And flying – this is what they usually do. I spend ages watching & waiting, and sometimes, they do this – which makes me laugh because they are so lovely to watch. Free spirits indeed 🙂

I guess I could’ve gone for sunsets, for trees, and they are indicative of the Free Spirit too, very much so, but for me, at the moment, it is birds (apart from my sweet little fat & fluffy cat).

I like these – especially the pelican and the wagtail singing. Birds somehow evoke free spirit because it feels like they can fly when they want to.

yeah – & I loved Mr Pelican too. As forthat willy wagtail – he’s my own little local lad & I think he terrorises my cat 😀

Wonderful shots of birds! I’m amazed at all you have! I find them very hard to capture so clearly as you have! I also believe that birds make awesome “free spirits”. Thanks for the ping back.

Free spirit indeed, the bird photos are fantastic, and you’re lucky to have them so close by, (just around the corner) the parrots, are they indigenous to Aussie?? Love this post, cause they give me trees and birds my favourites… love it.

🙂 The parrots are Australian natives, but not native to western Australia. They’re Port Lincolns, from South Australia & bring disease and unwanted competition to the natives which are very endangered because of habitat & food loss. Nonetheless, they are pretty and noisy and fun to watch 🙂 & glad you liked the post.

I believe they’re creeping in, but they’re more in the eastern states rather than here. I think they watch for them, like sparrows (& I love & miss sparrows)

😀 & I’ve realized I was thinking of another Indian feral – not the mynah. No – they’re not in WA at all. The one I was thinking of is a real worry though – Indian crow. And here’s a (rather beautiful) parrot that’s also starting to show up. I’ve even seen one here: indian green parrot. Probably released from an aviary. Not a good thing at all.

Ok now we’re talking about birds I don’t know, but I did read that a certain parrot was becoming a pest on the eastern side of Aussie, and wondered where such a explosion of a certain specie could come from… and now it’s just dawned on me… probably like the Myna a bird in a cage that has escaped and now we sit with the result…

I’m not sure. There’s many parrots in Aust, and because of the rains over the last few years on that side of the continent, maybe numbers of parrots have exploded. I will have to look it up. But yes, many of the ferals – at least here – are due to either accidental or deliberate release. Liek some of the squatic pests causing havoc amongst turtle & fish populations.
